Currently Dvds are cheap and Blu-ray discs are expensive, in much the same way as when Dvd started out and Vhs Video tapes were the dominant way to watch movies at home. This will change and Blu-ray will become cheaper, but at the occasion those of us with a funds need to watch our spending and get the maximum whole of value out of each pound/dollar we spend. Here's my top tips for deciding when to buy a Dvd and when it's worth buying a Blu-ray and spending that extra money.
I've currently got a pretty big movie library - somewhere nearby 500 titles - and it has breadth from kiddie films (for the kids... Honestly!) all the way to some bad dream flicks. I've also got a nice surround sound amplifier (5.1 surround sound), a decent sized Tv (40" 1080p), a Dvd player that upscales to 1080p and a Playstation 3 that plays blu-rays.
Blu-ray
I supervene a few straightforward steps when deciding what and when to buy a Blu-ray (especially true if i'm buying a copy of a film I already own on Dvd):
Is it a movie made in the last 5 years? If so then the potential is likely to be well transferred on to the Blu-ray disc.
Is it for the adults in the house? The kids can't tell the unlikeness if wall-e is on Dvd or Blu-ray so why spend more?
Is it cheap? If the price is right then there's no imagine not to buy a future-proofed Blu-ray instead of a Dvd (or the opposite)
Is it a film you'll watch again and again? Why spend money on an inferior copy of the movie that'll be watched time and time again (and will look even worse if you ever buy a bigger Tv in future)
Is it a "real" film rather than an animation? Animations typically scale up best than original films from Dvd, unless you in fact look something like south park isn't going to look much best on blu-ray than Dvd.
If a Movie scores 2 or more on the above then it's a candidate for buying on Blu-ray, if it's scores 3 or more then I'll buy the blu-ray version.
With the above points I've managed to stop myself buying some things on impulse and wasting money on Blu-rays that aren't going to change my life. I hope it helps you too!
